Conserving Resources and Reducing Pollution
Alternative forms of energy are beginning to reduce dependence upon fossil fuels but fossil fuels will remain the main energy source for many years to come. To allow for sustainable economic development two strategies can also be used.
  • to conserve resources by recycling and greater energy efficiency
  • to establish pollution controls to reduce ozone layer damage, acid rain and global warming
Conserving Resources
Recycling - is the recovery and conversion of waste products into new materials. However, recycling is only worthwhile if it saves the natural resources without consuming a large amount of energy for reprocessing.
Resource Substitution - this is using material which is easier to recycle. For example using aluminium instead of metals which are harder to recycle.
Energy Efficiency - by making buildings more energy efficiency and lose less heat less energy is lost. This could include fitting double glazing and draught excluders. Also cars were fitted with catalytic converters which reduced the amount of pollution released.
